Out of Place
We were given the option of focusing on:
- Detail
- Motion
- Out of Place
- Shelter
for our upcoming exam. I decided to focus on Out of Place for this project as I felt it was the most accessible. This could range from something as simple as a red sweet in a bowl of blue sweets to a park bench-slide that is has been digitally formed through Photoshop.
One artist who focuses on Out of Place photography is Robert Rickhoff here is one of his images:

Critical Analysis: Sign Pavement
Content:
This image is called Sign Pavement and was produced by an artist called Robert Rickhoff from Germany. He lived in Netherlands when he graduated from university with a bachelor degree in Design. This image could have a significant social and political meaning. As the sign stops just as a new road opens, much like how as humans many opportunities arise. This sign brings the opportunity to an abrupt end. The political meaning could be encouraging youth not to go down certain paths that could get them in trouble, e.g drugs, smoking, drinking etc. Also, the political meaning could be that certain people should not try to socialize with specific people, as they could change them as a person, or put them along the wrong roads. Robert Rickhoff grew up in Germany, where they're very efficient and strict (stereo-typically). Therefore, Rickhoff may have been encouraged not to follow certain people or go down a certain road in his upbringing. Context: This piece is quite fittingly titled "Sign Pavement" as it is a sign, on a pavement. We can see a bright yellow colour on the sign, that really grabs the attention of the person looking at this image, it does this because it delivers a certain message telling people to stop! Maybe, the ongoing long road, could be a metaphor for going down the wrong route in life, and the sign could be a metaphor of a significant other warning someone not to go down that route. The name of this piece (Sign Pavement) is appropriate as it is very literal and explains exactly what the picture is, a sign on a pavement. Process: The sign is metal, and is saturated along the concrete floor, the artist (Rickhoff) hasn't used any different angles, he has used a straight angle, he may have used this to emphasizes the length of the road. Form: This image is unlikely to be a raw, unedited image, as a sign is likely to be placed appropriately away from the footpath. It is likely that Rickhoff used a digital editing platform like Photoshop to create this image. Evaluate: I like the piece it is so simple and meaningless yet has a lot of narrative significant meaning, when you look beyond the picture, I feel like this was the effect that Robert Rickhoff set out to create. However, I feel like the artist could've been more creative with the angles, or possibly used more materials. |
Mindmap:
Here are I have provided an in-depth analysis of what I could do during this project. As you can see I have plenty of opportunity to branch out and explore new avenues. I have not used Photoshop too much in Unit 1, therefore this is something that I can explore more thoroughly.
As you can see from the right hand side of the picture, Out of Place could be very simple, and the food is a great example, as they have a different colored object that stands out from the other patterns in the background.

Photoshoot 1 Plan:
Robert Rickhoff focuses very much on the abnormal and illogical. For Example:
As you can see these images do not make a lot of sense and are considered very abstract in the modern day art industry, here Rickhoff uses photoshop to create abstract images, I will imitate this as I think it is very abnormal and creative, in the aspect of it being so unique.
Photoshoot 1:
WWW: I have clearly linked my photoshoot, to my chosen photographer Robert Rickhoff. I have experimented with photoshop and have tried to base my work around Rickhoff. I have been very creative.
EBI: Try to use photoshop more effectively and in a more advanced manner, in order to cut out rough edges in these images.

Photoshoot 2 Plan:
For my next photoshoot, I will take more risk and will be heavily reliant on Photoshop in order to produce the best possible images. Robert Rickhoff uses Photoshop to create an abnormal image, he does this by using specific tools in Photoshop to bend the object in the image to make it look abstract and out of place.

Photoshoot 2:
WWW: Here I have tried to emulate the work of Robert Rickhoff by using Photoshop, especially in the second photo, I feel there is a clear resemblance between my own work and Rickhoff's. I have gone out of my comfort zone experimenting with Photoshop.
EBI: I feel I could have put in more effort when using Photoshop, for the first image,.

Critical Analysis: Lazy Dog
Context
The title of this piece is "Lazy Dog" and it was created in 2007. In this piece I can see a woman walking her dog who is attached to balloons which are levitating him off of the floor. This shows that the dog is very lazy and that the owner doesn't care. This could indicate that maybe as a human race we are too stubborn towards animals health. Content: This piece was created by a Swedish photographer called Erik Johansson. I think that this piece maybe inspired by a lack of caring towards animals health and how they live this may have inspired him whilst making this. Process: Johansson here uses balloons to levitate the dog. This image has been digitally edited, he may have used photoshop to edit this, due to the date (2007). Evaluate: I like the idea of including an animal and a human in the same picture as not many use professional photographers use animals in their picture. I do however dislike the mundaneness of the image, and it is hard to make assumptions as to what the true meaning of this photograph really is. |
Photoshoot 3 Plan:
Having looked at the work of Swedish photographer Erik Johansson in my recent Critical Analysis, I have decided I will try to emulate his work in "Lazy Dog" in my next photoshoot. I plan on taking a picture of a person, a wide background, and some balloons. With the work of photoshop, I plan to digitally re-align all of the images and do my best to replicate his piece.
Photoshoot 3
WWW: Here you can see a clear link between the professional work of Erik Johanssen and the amateur work of myself. I have responded to the critical analysis with a photoshoot trying to replicate his work.
EBI: Try to pay attention to finer details, e.g sharpness, lighting, potentially adding shadows to the image.

Here is how I aligned this image. I used photoshop to select Theo, I then pressed the 'Copy' button, followed by the 'Paste' button. I then added some balloons and dragged Theo to the top right hand corner.
Critical Analysis: Balloon Head
Context:
This image does not have a suitable title, though I will call it "Balloon Head". In the piece you can see a floating clock attached to some balloons. You can also see a person sitting down on a chair with a balloon for a head instead of an actual head. The clock may resemble that we as humans all have an expiry date, and the time will eventually come. The absence of the head may indicate that we should not pay much attention as to when that time will come, but to enjoy everything that we can see around us. Content: This piece was created by a Swedish photographer called Tommy Inberg. I think that this piece may be inspired by the idea of a time clock on life. Process: This image was published in 2012, so he may have used photoshop to edit this image, his work is based on digital editing so it is very likely that he did use this tool. Evaluate: I like the idea of this image, as it is very relevant and can spread a much deeper message to his audience, I also like the black and white effect he adopts, that makes his image look extra classy. |
Photoshoot 4 Plan
In my next photoshoot, I plan to imitate the work of Tommy Inberg by attempting to recreate the piece I appropriately titled "Balloon Head". I plan to do this by using a digital camera, and editing through Photoshop.

Photoshoot 4:
Photoshoot 5 Plan:
In my previous shoot I emulated the work of Tommy Inberg's "Balloon Head" and managed to replicate it at a fairly creditable standard. However, I plan to re-do this photo but taking it to the next level. One of the flaws of my previous shoot is that the location was very irrelevant and didn't mean much.
I plan to scower around my school looking for a more abandoned, neglect and meaningless location. I was also told on my Tracker Document that my location could be improved. Also I need to work on the finer details as there was many small details that could've been improved.

Photoshoot 5
WWW: Here I have worked on my last piece and have found a more isolated, neglect and mundane environment, I have also experimented with photoshop.
EBI: Focus on better backdrop, take more care when adding a sky/backdrop.

Here I have experimented with photoshop and have applied various filters/adjustments such as :
-Sharpness -Vignette -Contrast |
Photoshoot 6:In my previous shoots, I have experimented with balloons, and often tried to make a clear underlining of the value/narrative of the image making it easy for the reader, however, in this shoot, I have decided to leave my audience thinking, creating an element of mystery.
I have titled this "Mystery Man". |
Final Piece Ideas:
Above you can see my initial plans for my forecoming final piece. I plan to conduct a photoshoot, inspired by two different artists and styles. Tommy Inberg (working with balloons) and Robert Rickhoff (working with signs). Here I plan to merge these two styles together to create a 2D image for my final piece. I plan on using some sort of sign work that will levitate off of the floor.
