Sign Pavement: Critical Analysis
Content:
This image is called Sign Pavement and was produced by an artist called Robert Rickhoff from Germany. He lived in Netherlands when graduated from university with a bachelor degree in Design. This image could have a significant social and political meaning. As the sign stops just as a new road opens, much like how as humans many opportunities arise. This sign brings the opportunity to an abrupt end. The political meaning could be encouraging youth not to go down certain paths that could get them in trouble, e.g drugs, smoking, drinking etc. Also, the political meaning could be that certain people should not try to socialize with specific people, as they could change them as a person, or put them along the wrong roads. Robert Rickhoff grew up in Germany, where they're very efficient and strict (stereo-typically). Therefore, Rickhoff may have been encouraged not to follow certain people or go down a certain road in his upbringing. Context: This piece is quite fittingly titled "Sign Pavement" as it is a sign, on a pavement. We can see a bright yellow on the sign, that really grabs the attention of the person looking at this image, it does this because it delivers a certain message telling people to stop! Maybe, the ongoing long road, could be a metaphor for going down the wrong route in life, and the sign could be a metaphor of a significant other warning someone not to go down that route. The name of this piece (Sign Pavement) is appropriate as it is very literal and explains exactly what the picture is, a sign on a pavement. Process: The sign is metal, and is saturated along the concrete floor, the artist (Rickhoff) hasn't used any different angles, he has used a straight angle, he may have used this to emphasizes the length of the road. Form: This image is unlikely to be a raw, unedited image, as a sign is likely to be placed appropriately away from the footpath. It is likely that Rickhoff used a digital editing platform like Photoshop to create this image. Evaluate: I like the piece it is so simple and meaningless yet has a lot of narrative significant meaning, when you look beyond the picture, I feel like this was the effect that Robert Rickhoff set out to create. However, I feel like the artist could've been more creative with the angles, or possibly used more materials. |
